In the first week I have analysed the conventions of the front covers of 3 magazines. The 3 covers are: an issue of Prime Living, Now and FourFourTwo.
Prime Living analysis -
- The title of the magazine connotes a higher class, suggesting readers will only be finding out about the best things.
- The slogan does the same as the title, implying that the lifestyle is a high quality one.
- Use of direct mode of address; looking straight at the reader sharing their luxury lifestyle with them.
- Teasers give variety of contents and the famous people featured. Subtitle done in fancier font to imply higher status.
- The image of the texan makes him appear quite rich with his suit, cigar and drink and the anchorage text suggests it's unique to Texas, making the feature more interesting.
- 3 main colours of white, yellow and brown are warm which implies a comfortable lifestyle.
Now analysis -
- The title of the magazine connotes an immediate feel, implying readers will be reading all the latest news.
- The slogan tries to convince the reader it's doing something new.
- Teasers to encourage reader to buy.
- Price is quite small implying it's more expensive than similar magazines and is hidden.
- Central image of Jennifer Aniston relies on the audience knowing she was in a relationship with Brad Pitt. The picture is quite stern suiting the anchorage text that tells of a warning and there's no direct mode of address as she's looking away, giving it a feeling you're looking in on a secret.
- The images are linked by the theme of celebrities and their love lives and the story titles act as anchorage text. The magazine assumes that this is interesting to the reader and that they know who these people are, especially as they mostly just use their first names.
- Main colours of pink, yellow and white are bright to catch the eye.

FourFourTwo analysis -
- The title of the magazine refers to a football formation, a very specific aspect of football, connoting that the writers are knowledgable. The formation is also seen as simple and dependable implying the same about the magazine.
- Price is quite small because it's fairly expensive.
- Buzzword makes the magazine seem special, especially that particular issue.
- Picture relies on the reader knowing who the players are, if not by the picture then by name as they put the names next to the pictures. Uses a direct mode of address, looking directly at the reader with serious faces, sharing their determination.
- Teaser givves the reader a taster of who features on the list.
- Graphic feature adds interest to cover.
- Plugs are quite vague about what exaqctly they're about but feature big names in football making the reader want to find out. Means it could just be a small story about them or a big interview.
- Main colours of black, yellow, red and white are bright and contrasting.
Detailed research into existing similar products which will deepen your understanding of codes/conventions of front covers.
