This week I took photos for my front cover and then analysed them to find the pros and cons and decide on which should appear on the cover.

The picture is a very wide shot as the subject is barely visible. It would need to be sharpened a little bit as it is slightly blurry. This blurriness might not be an issue if I use it as a smaller picture. It might be a good idea to crop the image so the roof of the common room is not visible, as it doesn’t appear to fit in with the rest of the picture. The sunlight through the window works well as it brightens up the area especially in the foreground, but the lights on the roof, while providing a brighter area, look too bright which is another reason it might be worth cropping them out of the photo. Other than the lights themselves the rest of the picture looks good as the brightness is usually in the middle of light and dark, making everything clearly visible. The setting is appropriate for the cover as it relates to a story that could be in the magazine. The room also looks like a church, with its rows of chairs, spacious room and large window, which connotes a positive message about the college.

The picture is a wide shot as the subject is taking up most of the frame. The picture doesn’t really need to be cropped or manipulated. The lighting of the photo is very good, making the colours vibrant and the long shadows interesting without being too dark or bright. The setting is appropriate for the cover as it relates to the stories and the background is fairly neutral making it easy to write over. The picture looks very calm connoting the same about the college.

The picture is a wide shot as the subject is taking up most of the frame. The picture needs to be sharpened as the motion has made it very blurry although this still might not make it usable. It may also be better to crop the players chasing the 2 main ones out of the picture, as they’re not properly visible. The lighting of this photo is poor because the picture looks very dull, even the grass looks more grey than green. The setting is appropriate for the stories and the background is neutral. The picture connotes that the college is hard working because of the enormous effort the players look as if they are putting in.

The picture is a medium close up as it focuses on a part of the subject, giving an impression of a large part of it; it’s also taken from an angle above, making the ground around it the background. The picture is of good quality and doesn’t need cropping, but it gives little indication it’s about the college and so maybe adding the college logo on top of the ball is a good idea. The lighting of the photo is okay, it’s not dull like some of the other pictures but it definitely hasn’t made the colours more vivid. The setting is appropriate for the stories and the background is made of neutral colours so it would be easy to write over. The picture doesn’t connote a large amount about the college other than that it is sporty which could be an issue.

  1. Great images which use the rules of photography and contain interest and variety. It also reflects our status as a rugby college - something that lots of the students are really excited about. You have thought carefully about the mise en scene of your images and what works and what doesn't. I'm pleased that you have a variety of images to play with.
